Several people have asked about this...
If you can possibly make it to DC -- DO IT! You will be glad you did!
Support the FREE
OUR PEOPLE March and Rally
The Free Our People March and Rally will be a major event in disability rights
history. Hundreds of activists leaving Philadelphia on September 4th will be
"Marching on Congress" to support MiCASSA, Medicaid reform and implementation
of the most integrated setting vision of the ADA.
On September 17th we will Rally in Washington, DC, 1 pm Upper Senate Park (on
Constitution Ave between Delaware and New Jersey Aves). This will the largest
gathering of disability rights activists since the signing of the ADA.
Please join us in DC on September 17th.
If live too far away to make it to DC, here are a few
suggestions of things you can do in your local community to be a part of this
historic day:
1. Call your Senators and Representative and ask them to become a sponsor of
MiCASSA (S. 971 - HR 2032);
2. Call your Senators and Representative and ask them to go
down to the Rally
3. Organize a press conference in support of the Free Our People March and
Rally. Focus on people in your community that need attendant services and
supports to stay out of nursing homes and other institutions. Call on
Congress to pass MiCASSA.
4. Organize a Rally in your community (North Carolina is holding a Rally on
the 17th). Invite folks from organizations representing disabilities and
older people, as well as other supporters. Focus on support of MiCASSA and
people who have been in nursing homes or other institutions.
5. Identify one person in a nursing home or other institution who wants
information on living in the community, and help that person get that
information. Remember: this issue will be won individual by individual; each
"liberation" is a victory.
6. Buy a Free Our People March and Rally T-Shirt. Find order form at
www.freeourpeople.org Buy one for a friend (can't buy just ONE!)
7. Sign on as "Supporter" of the Free Our People March and Rally.
8. Before and during this event help us spread the word to your local
media and disability rights supporters!
Remember - reforming the long term care system is like turning the Queen
Mary. It's turning but the thing is so darn big we don't always realize it.
We must keep on hands on the wheel and keep turning. Together we can FREE OUR
PEOPLE!

Pennsylvania Grant Proposals Now
On-Line
To see the direction that Pennsylvania is moving,
please visit the link below and check out the five grant applications that PA
has filed with the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare. These grant applications
reflect the interest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in serving people in
the community, rather than requiring them to enter or remain in a nursing home
when they are Medicaid eligible for assistance due to age or disability. The
grant proposals involve:
- Quality Assurance
- Direct Care Workers
- Attendant Care
- Resource Centers
- Money Follows the Person

Living Advisory Committee Needs Your Input
NOTICE
Honoring the Past, Envisioning the Future
At its next regular meeting, the Community Living Advisory
Committee will discuss ways to initiate a long term planning process to improve
the system of community services for people with physical disabilities. To help
us prepare, we welcome your written comments on the following questions that
will be discussed at the session. Please note that this is just the beginning
of our outreach. We look forward to working with all of you as we move forward.
What's working in the current system of community services for people with
physical disabilities?
What are best features of the current system?
What works particularly well?
What should stay in place?
What Needs Changing?
What could be improved in the current system?
What is a source of problems?
What must change and why?
What, if any, changes should be made in structure or participation for future
planning sessions?
What are the goals and questions for the next session?
What additional information is needed?
How should we structure outreach to the broader community to ensure their
participation in planning?
