Inside:
In 1984, the Congress, by House Joint Resolution 638,
designated the month of October 1984 as ``National Head Injury Awareness
Month'' to encourage public recognition of and compassion for the complex
problems caused by head injury. Congress authorized and requested the
President to issue a proclamation in observance of this month.
Ronald Reagan, then President of the United States of
America, proclaimed the month of October 1984 as National Head Injury
Awareness Month. In his proclamation he stated: "I call upon all government
agencies, health organizations, communications media, and people of the
United States to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies and
activities."
The focus
of Brain Injury Awareness Month 2003 is preschool children and brain injury
prevention. The Brain Injury Association of America, in partnership with
Medtronic, has worked to develop the I.M. Brainy project, which incorporates
educational activities, a preschool curriculum, and a readers theater script
to spread the brain injury prevention message among preschool children.
Please contact your local
state affiliate
or the Brain Injury
Association of America if you are interested in using the I.M.
Brainy curriculum in your hometown.

The regular monthly meeting of the Pittsburgh Area Brain
Injury Alliance was held this evening. More than twenty people attended.
Many individuals shared strategies for overcoming obstacles to recovery
and their recovery successes. Some family members shared their experiences
and were encouraged by others present.
Fred Kellinger of Independent Concepts, Inc. gave a brief
overview of The Jogger™, a small wearable device that allows individuals
with cognitive impairments to take information with them, everywhere they
go. Developed under a National Institutes of Health grant, and designed
and tested in cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
Rehabilitation Hospital, The Jogger™, can enable individuals who
experience short-term memory difficulties to manage their own affairs and
thereby achieve greater independence.
